Some Flash/ XML queries

Post by pixelfiesta »

Hi Guys,

This is for someone who is well-versed in FLash, XML and programming. But others are welcome to comment. I am working on my online portfolio and wish to discuss a few things while it is in development stage

The Works section: Its going to be a XML driven flash which will pull individual JPGs from a library and the XML file will have the descriptions. Mine is a vast portfolio, ranging from Books, Events, Branding, typography to web, plus I have worked for different industries like Banking, Hospitality, IT, Petroleum, etc. And then there is a whole list of clients I have worked for.

I was wondering if there is a script or there is something that will allow the user to see my portfolio in 3 different ways — By Category, By Industry and By Clients. I do not wish to recreate different folders and then duplicate anything into them. All should be script driven.

Does anyone have a solution? Have you seen something like this before? Any suggestion on how else this could be beautifully displayed.

Hi Pixelfiesta!
Perhaps you should try the free FlashGallery

Flash Gallery is a FREE, simple photo gallery built in Macromedia Flash 2004, that uses XML files to store the information about which images to display. The gallery is easy to configure and update since you need to change only the XML file.

you could create different albums for different 'Menus' (clients/industry etc). I havent explored it in depth, but if you cant code much, then you could see the functions this one could give you and adapt your navigation accordingly.

You could also try SlideShowPro

this is again, with the understanding that you cant code. If you CAN code, then of course you could build yourself anything you wanted :)

yeah, i browsed these ones. but the problem is my requirement is very specific. There are tons of flash galleries (paid and free) that can do this easy job of pulling images through a XML file but but I want a 3-way navigation system for the same files/data

you will probably have to code something by yourself.

or I think slideshowpro director may help. check it out inside out...

or easier, maybe create a static site in dreamweaver...

:-) Paramvir... As I said earlier, this is for my online portfolio. And you know how Creatives are at creating their own portfolio/ websites. It has taken more time than I had thought of.

I haven't found a complete solution, but have identified a template which allows two-tier navigation!

I have also posted this on various web design forums and quite a few people have offered to do this for a small fee, which I am pretty open to...

So that is where I am. Not moved much... :-)

would love to see the results. I myself would have preferred a mix of php/css or ruby etc instead of flash. until flash allows me to right click, copy paste the text and download the images :)

Sure! I am excited about it. But just that I am unable to give enough time.
End of July is my deadline. Hope it happens
