Pencil Sauce Illustrations

Post by pencilsauce »

Hi,

we're an illustration studio based out of Bangalore. We're a sort of a niche setup because we do only illustration and concept art, no design, advertising, new media work etc.

Here is some of our stuff.

We use opensource software for most of all our illustration work. (http://www.pencilsauce.wordpress.com/)

To be honest, it's been an uphill climb so far to get art directors to use illustrators on a regular basis. Most people automatically visualise in photographic imagery I suppose. Even if an illustration is commissioned, illustrators are almost always treated as freelancers or unreliable, and the fees for illustration are always conceded grudgingly, and in nuts. Peanuts mostly. As a professional studio, this makes life difficult for us. If you're an art director from an agency perhaps you can help me understand this. Why is illustration stonewalled. Is it that the client doesn't see value and therefore it's difficult to justify costs?

Wish I knew. Perhaps you could tell me if you do.

Also do let me know what you think of our work. More here... http://www.pencilsauce.com
and if you like it, please remember to spread the love.

Thanks,
Pencil Sauce

Yes we do! We seem to be doing a lot of animatic work these days, but I haven't put up too much on the website yet.

Heya Kanya
We do some work for agencies and studios in Mumbai from time to time, but no studio there.
But since we're largely web based, using our FTP servers and online project management system most clients don't feel the distance.

BTW, any illustrators in Delhi? There's a workshop on children's illustration coming up that you may enjoy. I've attached the application form. Do spread the word.

Saumya, thanks again. Will you be attending the workshop?

Heya Shanty, Thanks. I just mailed you.

Desh Premi, it's a workshop that concentrates more on illustration strategies rather than specifically on techniques. Many 'illustrators' tend to draw what seems like static objects. Great art but no life. What differentiates an illustration from say a graphic, is the fact that an illustration illustrates an idea, story, concept etc. A graphic is merely a visual representation.

This workshop steers you to those aspects.

Heya Kanya,

What you're saying is ideal and that is how it ought to be. Unfortunately many agency folk are not trained in cinematic narrative, film making techniques etc. This is a problem because in many cases the agency person focuses entirely on the product or other hero elements rather than looking at the film as a cohesive whole.
The end result is a semi comic-book/storyboard sheet that only makes it as far as the client approval. The director often entirely discards the storyboard because it is not appropriate and often does not carry the right camera notations.

I've also seen that if I try to give this gyan to an agency person, he smiles benignly and passes the storyboard over to a freelance artist who charges lesser and does exactly what the agency person needs. So for the sake of business, I sometimes just tend to give the agency what they want, and collect my cheque.

very well put, pencilsauce. but arent you afraid you shouldn't be posting these words on a public forum, lest the agency folk get wry of hiring you? anywhichway agency creatives are insecure suckers with no specialization, save scam work...
