Stage was set, design was the reason and Kyoorius took the initiative.
1st look : Installations by Subodh Gupta.
Subodh used 5ltrs Bisleri bottles and beautifully designed it in his own style.
2nd look : garbage bin installation. Jeans pants made up of paper and garbage waste.
3rd look : Another installation by student of NID.
Grand Hyatt was beautifully designed by Kyoorius, they made royal 5-star look more designed and colourful.
1st GLANCE TO THE CREATIVES
On the first day I met a familiar face from Bates. He is Creative Director- Amot Ghotkar. We shared some thoughts on design and then I shared a DesiCreative postcard which we specially designed for our promotion.
Moving ahead I saw some big names from Indian advertising industry like Anant Rangaswami, Kartik Iyer (Happy Creatives, Bangalore), Ravi Deshpande ( Contract advertising, Mumbai), Vikram Gaikwad (co-founder- Creative Land Asia), KV Sridhar (Leo Burnett) and many more.
We also saw some big names from design agencies like Fish eye design, Multia design, Alok Nanda and co. etc.
It was my first year and I saw surprised to see all creative minds coming together at one platform. It was impressive.
INSIDE THE EVENT
almost more than 2000 seats, 2 big screens and one large stage. It was huge. The event, the people and everyone around us. I was surrounded by Design and people who only has design running in their minds. And I was the one with Marketing/branding and communication background, from my perspective design is everything and design is all everyone needs. And my main aim was to get as much knowledge as I can.
I grabbed the seat in the 3rd row just few meters away from the main stage where I could get a clear view of the speaker and other activities. On my front row Ravi Deshpande and Vikram grabbed the seats.
SPEAKERS
The first speaker of the event and my first experience of Kyoorius Designyatra to hear was Simon Sankarayya (Sanky) creative and founder of ALLofUS. The opening session was great. It was first day of Digiyatra so Sanky said all relevant things and ideas worth floating in Digital space including design in it .
Sanky is designer and typographer by profession, He believes Designing is EMPOWERING
According to Sanky an individual must be himself, be accountable, He must do what makes him happy and MONEY DOESN’T MATTER.
A great thought shared by Sanky :What would you do if money was no object?
He said Digital is new electricity. The connections are built at a lightning fast speed.
and Great Ideas cost nothing.
Next Speaker
The next speaker and one of my favourite on the first day was Joao Cardoso Fernandes- Chief Creative officer, View Isobar.
Joao with a traditional portuguese moustache , a great thinker, visualiser and idea generator. His presentation was worth inspiring and mainly his thought on SKY campaign. They came up with an idea of recording a television programme by using twitter and simply adding hashtag in the tweet. eg: 9pm show on espnstar sports #SKYREC. So SKY means the digital provider and REC is recoding. Joao made this possible by playing a bit with technology and creativity, they synced the twitter account of an individual to their SkY digi account. So the moment you tweet from your account it would save a programme at your home. Isn’t it amazing.
FACEBOOK AND MARGARET STEWART
Margaret Stewart is product designer of Facebook. Formerly she worked for Google, Youtube etc. She is inspiring but she somehow didn’t share much information that she should/can. She didn’t speak about why and how? Instead she focused more on the philosophical digital theory.
Everything is designed in one way or other.
We see Design everywhere right from bandaid, ice cream cone and paper bags.
Be a designer and a facilitator.
Some interesting campaigns from Day 1 were:
#Thereturn campaign from Isobar, Poland. This camapign was for Adidas and injury proned basketball star Dereck Rose.
DAY 2 DESIGN YATRA
End of Digi Yatra and start of DesignYAtra. We had a good session and learnt a lot from Sanky, Joao and Margaret. We started our day with Designyatra. DesignYatra session had a mix of some Asian and European creatives. The first day saw lot of Asian Creatives giving their presentation on Designing in different fields.
KV Sridhar was one of the Indian speaker who stressed more on giving importance to Womens in India and how he used Womens as objects in commercial for their growth in traditional indian society. He showed how Leo Burnett got associated with various Ngos and promised them for the upbringing of Womens in multilateral society of India. He showed women power through commercial Leo Burnett made like KBC, Indian Idol, IDBI banck commercial etc.
SPEAKER PAUL HUGHES
A great speaker and presenter. His presentation was not only sound but also visual too.
-Paul believes design Journey is not backward or forward but it is inwards.
-He explanied the theory of different view and different people.
-We awaken when we see the world through relationships
Paul explained three levels of relationships
1st role : Individual
2nd role : Interacting
3rd role : Institition.
Thought by Paul : We are moving from Egosystem to Ecosystem.
Well KDY was not only about design but it also presented some young talent who were excellent in their fields for eg: engineering and innovation. We saw the presence of Susant Patnaik, 19yr old serial entrepreneur and inventor of breathing sensory apparatus for paralyzed people. At the age of 19 he invented sense proof technology where one could use microsoft paint without using mouse or keyboard.
Another surprise inventor was Dharamveer Khamboj, he started his life journey as a rickshaw driver in Delhi then moving ahead and thought of doing something innovatie he made a grinding machine which would grind tons of mangoes in seconds without breaking the seed. He also made beauty products made of Aleovera. He was the highlight of the day.

-Bold thinking is seamingly experience.
-Tim gave example of LEGO, how Lego game brand used its positioning in the market when it was going down.
-Tim believes there must be fun in your work. There must be design in the institution. Eg: Slide in the head office of Redbull and Google.
--Dreaming- exploring and then location was the thought of the day from Tim.
-He gave example of Asian Paints. Like how colours are important in life. And how Asian Paints positioned the brand in the Indian market by opening up customised paint shop known as Colours by Asian Paints.

Eye catchy moment was the print ad she made for Cannes. Image in the previous slide.
Speaker – Oliver Jeffers
-Artist, storyteller, day dreamer and revolution in design field.
-He explained his entire presentation through a story.
-Difference between how he designed before going to Design school and then after coming out. (Not much difference)
-Designed book covers and comics.
-Also designed an animated movie.
-The remark was dipped Mona Lisa painting.
-Incredible picture book design by Oliver was the highlight of the entire designyatra.
-Some of his award winning books are how to catch a star, lost and found, the way back home.
Speaker : Ramesh Satiah- founder of Song zu
Ramesh is music composer and sound artist. He believes sound is designed and composed. Likewise design is everywhere so it is in music.
-Ad films/movies consists of 70% music.
-He shared a video of how different instrument tunes when put together make a good music.
-He explained like how music can change the mood or sense of the visual we are watching. Eg: he showed plastic bag which is revolving everywhere in a strong breeze and then he applied different music like he showed the same with mysteric tune, one with sad and other with happy. Like music changes our perspective of looking towards a scene of adfilm or movie.
Dominic Harris – Founder and Creative Director of Cinimod Studio, London.
-Dominic is more of a technology guy who is collaborating technology with architecture.
-His fascination towards light and electronics.
-Interactive light sculpture.
-Dummy Alien spacecraft made by them for the promotion of new Video game : Halo, which flew through the entire city of london.
-They designed a football sadium in Peru. Interactive electronic design.
Speaker: Melissa Weigel – Founder of Moment factory.
Likewise Dominic, Melissa is also into interactive design.
-Her major highlight of the carrier was entire interactive event setup for American artist Madonna.
-Her presentation showed more about the work structure of moment factory.
-How moment factory works and difficulties and amount of work involved in interactive designing.
Overall experience
-Mix of digital and design thoughts.
-Some great minds and great philosophies.
-Impressive speakers : Oliver Jeffers, Paul Hughes, Dominic Harris, Laura Jordan Bambach, Joao Cardoso Fernandes and Melissa Weigel.
-Thoughts : Different views different people, Designing is empowering.
-Panel talks : Laura, Karin Fong and Anant Rangaswami over womens working in advertising industry.
-Innovative minds : Sussant and Dharmveer Khamboj.
-Do what you feel is good and forget about the money.
