According to data released by Komli Media’s online audience measurement and analytics platform ViziSense.com, Google’s email service Gmail attracted 18.2 million unique users from India in September 2009, as against Yahoo Mail which attracted 16.8 million unique users. Rediffmail, MSN mail and In.com mail are the other three most popular email services in the country.
During September 2009, Gmail witnessed an increase of 2.82 per cent in traffic compared to the previous month. Yahoo Mail on the other hand, saw a decline of 7.69 per cent. Rediffmail also witnessed a decline of 7.13 per cent. Microsoft’s MSN Mail and Web18’s In.com email service, however, experienced an increase of 5.6 and 2.7 per cent, respectively in traffic since August 2009.
ViziSense has clarified that the above numbers for Yahoo Mail represent the unduplicated reach of both Mail.Yahoo.com and Mail.Yahoo.co.in, as well as YahooMail.com. However, the numbers do not include the usage and access of Yahoo Mail through the new Yahoo homepage.
Citing reasons for not including the usage and access of Yahoo Mail users through the new Yahoo homepage, Amit Bhartiya, business head, ViziSense, said that the new Yahoo homepage has a slide that allows users to access mail from the homepage itself. “ViziSense only tracked the URLs Mail.Yahoo.com, Mail.Yahoo.co.in, and YahooMail.com and not the Yahoo.com (homepage) as besides email, there are a whole lot of things that the user can access from the homepage,” Bhartiya told AlooTechie.
