the seashell

once upon a time long long ago there was a sea shell. it was white when it wasn’t blue. and pink when it wasn’t either blue or white. and sometimes red too.

it lived on the shores of a very deep green sea. you see, it didn’t have anybody living inside it for many many years and so didn’t have to move around much. it just lay around and changed colours unless a wave tossed it about an inch or two this way or that.

sometimes a little wandering something would crawl up to it with all of its none, two or sixteen legs, stay for a while and then would crawl away again. the shell was either too big, or too small, or too colourful. they were fussy, these little ones.

sometimes the sea birds would gather around it. “what’s in it what’s in it what’s in it” they would go. and then they would always fly away again. to come back when they had forgotten there was nothing in it.

so day followed day, night followed night, and white followed blue followed pink followed red.

and the shell is still there today. if you find it, let it be. because that is where it belongs.

some where some time some how

a little bird was born.

and wasn't it amazing?

that it should be born on that particular branch

on that particular tree

on that particular hill?

i mean it could have been born on the tree next to it

or on the ledge by jane's window sill.

but no.

it was born where it was.

exactly there.

to two proud parents.

proud and busy parents.

how they flew.

to and fro to and fro to and fro.

bringing worms, butterflies, bugs.

and the little bird grew.

and soon it could see beyond.

at first a little beyond its own beak.

then a little beyond its branch.

and then the sky.

and then more sky.

and more.

but what after?

it burnt with that question.

what after?

i have just got to find out

it thought.

i have to see beyond

it thought.

and it flapped its wings hard

as it strained its neck to look

further and further and further

until one day it flew

straight towards the sky

at last.

and in the joy of its flight

forgot all about what it wanted to fly for.

and it became just another bird.

flying in a sky that was enough for it.
