Not all can do it, certainly. BUt we have to be entrepreneurs. We used to freelance a lot while in the agency then started ou own design shop and are happy. Not rich, but happy that we are own bosses. We miss the servicing support though.

some have become placement consultants as well. The truth is after about 10-15 years in advertising creative, most people have to look for a new career. In this business everyone is always looking for young people.

I agree. Its a career that doesnt last long. Its the same with a lot of creative jobs. Look at MTV VJs or models. They are employed as long as they are young. As they get older, they have to go out and look for work.

Waow, this is disheartening. There does not seem to be any sense of security in advertising.

the industry is dominated by people who don't know real india and look westwards and award books for inspiration. they are insecure of people who know the interiors and capable of influencing the masses. the 2nd kind are insecure of the first kind because they and their craft is looked down by the 1st kind. creatives on the whole are insecure because servicing don't value them much and have sold their souls to earn profits and appease clients. it's a vicious cycle.

@kyarajesh:

Agree with you.

There is a big divide between these white converts and our own desi people. I agree whole heartedly. there are these people who only read 'italian vogue' and 'british GQ' and have no idea of real india, its problems and needs. they think India is progressing because they are getting fat paychecks.

they want to hire gora directors, dops, stylists, designers, magazine etcs without understanding if they fit in the indian milieu.

they talk amongst them in English and look down upon those who converse in Hindi or a local dialect. Here, being a Punjabi or Gujarati or Maharashtrian or such is looked down upon. Here people are 'cosmopolitan' meaning 'lack of identity and no depth or understanding how cultural differences can create a richer experience'.

they dont bother about real clients' real needs. they just bother about getting their scam work published in some popular advertising websites and magazines. so they can go to cannes and get drunk. so they can shoot in bangkok and do the unwritables.

Client servicing people are hopeless because they are unable to get money from clients. To win business, they resorted to the lame strategy of cost reductions, which have put agencies in such a tight spot that they are resorting to bribes to boost bottomlines. Large agencies undercut smaller agencies. They dont say 'we are better', they say 'we are cheaper'. They have lost the 15% margin since long.

the agency business in India needs an overhaul.
