Advertising today is most un-innovative

Post by basant kumar »

I have been a member of these forums for sometime now, and also other advertising forums. I have spent some 17 years in the business. And I feel that today's advertising is more passionless and less innovative than ever before.

There is a dearth of ideas. There is too much politics and bribery. There is no leadership. The agencies are not making enough money as they have all undercut each other to get the same small set of clients.

I do not SEE any innovation happening around me anymore. You may see the entries at One Shows or Cannes or online journals but whjere is teh good released work anymore? Apart from a few odd examples like ZooZoo (which could not be well adapted to print anyway). Look at the logo designs of today. Look at the newspapers, the maghazines, the billboards, the brochures and packaging. It all sucks. Look at our home grown brands: Cafe Coffe Day, Big Bazaar etc. The branding SUCKS!!!! There is no iota of design and intelligence in all of this.

Why do you think this is happening? Do we lack a sense of aesthetics at large? Is it the clients? Is it the client servicng?

(I am not talking about TV commercials because they are pretty much made by people who DO NOT WORK IN AGENCIES)

I agree about the released work. But I think there are far more entries for awards these days.

the lack of money has driven good people out of the business. there is more money is TV today, so agencies are pushing for TV. Print, unfortunately is considered a poor cousin and neglected.

The other advantage of TV is agencies can outsource the creative. That means without having to have in house talent they can get something done which is far superior to what they would have liked to do themselves...

also, I think , to add, TV is outsourced. Print, the agencies have to sit and work on themselves.

Agency Accounts people get paid less than their client side peers. So obviously, those who are capable jump to the other side. Those who are left behind are often not god enoigh to be able to sell good creative. And push the creatives to deliver.

also, agencies are losing their stature as custodians of brands and as partners of clients. They are now behaving like suppliers. So for an accounts management person, its perhaps more fulfilling to be on the client side.

I second Basant's opinion on branding and packaging. Indian talent has a lot of experience and the potential to do good work. But unfortunately its going from bad to worst.
