Hinglish - A third language, a combination of words that connects to people or a threat to Hindi language? Whats your opinion? [/b]

Regional languages had been made to play  second fiddle for quiet some time. But in recent years the scene has changed, :D with regional advertising gaining importance. Although english is understood by more and more people, one can relate better in their own mother tongue. And thankfully ad agencies are taking notice of this. But the genuineness of this effort is questionable :?: Regional languages are used only as an extension to english. Instances of Regional languages getting their due are few. But the  disturbing fact is neglect by some leading advt. agencies in this matter. Many ads are just translated, word by word, making a mockery of copy. What's required is transcreations. Giving copy a regional flavour, making it lively to the reader, so he can relate to it. Thanx moily for adding this  topic to our very own desicreative.

killer is right in a way. english is understood by more and moe people. but India is holding on to its own langages and cultures like no other country. we still watch more of our very own desi movies THAN hollywood. even the hippest of the hip will at varipous points to back to the roots, whether its the wedding attire, or whether its choice of food.

Hinglish makes perfect sense for relevant brands, like say Pepsi.

some Versace in India, it wont make sense. Versace will still sell, since it has a tremendous amount of branding already existing, but it WILL bring it down a bit...

I think what is suffering is the Hindi script. I fear one day we will write Hindi in roman alphabets in just like Philipino, Turkish etc.

Look at Bollywood, gone are the days when the film names were writtien in English, Hindi and Urdu.

I have seen Greeks, Israelis (Hebrew), Arabs etc using their scripts with English without losing their alphabets. We could do the same with Hinglish...Keep Hindi script alongside Roman alphabet.

I do agree with you dalbir, The script is losing its shine. And we need to restore it. How about a campaign dalbir. Creating awareness in using the script.

Agreed Dalbir. Even when you look at Coke ads with THANDA MATLAB CC, why don't they write that in devnagri?

Same for Pepsi's DIL MANGE more....I think it would look great in a combination of devnagri and roman.

Also look at Chinese and japese ads where they use both the chinese and english characters side by side.

LET'S BRING BACK DEVNAGRI SCRIPT.

Moils, let's do the ad.

actually what can u do...even on a desiforum we have to chat in english...so i guess hindi script will die at least in the main cities soon. the only way to tackle this is to teach us to use hindi computers at schools so that each of us can use hindi keyboard at work/home.

when the chinese, arabs can do it why not we????

Its strange, we mostly converse in Hinglish, but when there is a movie in that language we cant take it.
Any desis read Hindi/regional language fiction, apart from English?
