Insensitive advertisements

Post by kyarajesh »

What’s with adfolks? Aren’t they supposed to be sensible, sensitive and responsible about what they communicate to people. Especially when advertisements have a big influence on how the kids think and behave. I was really shocked to see an ad where a precocious school kid, in presence of guardians and teachers in the school auditorium, proclaims that her mom has another man in her life and that every woman has another man in her life.
In an automobile ad when a guy in his car is irritated by incessant honking by somebody driving behind him, a voiceover offers him two options: the first one being disfiguring the face of the guy. Legitimising road rage? Come on! That certainly cannot be an option, even if the protagonist doesn’t opt for it.
In another ad, this time for a pencil, a school boy throws a paper ball at his lady teacher. He goes unpunished because the pencil enhances his handwriting. The voice over rounds it off with ‘jab handwriting saaf, to sab kuch maaf’. Next, somebody will show ways to walk away with murder.
Then there are some really insensitive ads for condoms and deodorants with raucous music and offensive dialogues.
It’s time the creative leaders and agency heads woke up to the glaring insensitivity in ads and put their foot down if clients insist on such ideas.

Even the Amul Macho "ye toh bada toing hai" ad with the monkey. That was ridiculous. I think that one was banned by the government too.

The newer Amul Macho ad with Saif is so good and so much better in its approach than this one.

Even the wildstone deodourant ad was outrageous.

Well what I would say is that generalization is the art of the stupid...If this is the case then some of you would agree to..um..lets say, " All actors in bollywood are incapable" Dear friends, just because there are bad fishies in the huge pond, good fishies don't stop breathing. While every industry/field/career/sector etc. has its evil side, theres a good side too. Its not just the govt. that is to be blamed in the 2G scam. Some telecom giants played a major role too..So does that mean the complete telecom sector is a big bad wolf eating up cute lil red riding hoods and no one should work there and crib on a forum.
I believe many of you are from the advertising sector itself and have joined the scathing egg hurling game at the industry rather than individual brands, clients or creatives responsible. Don't you think it is people like you who write these scripts and get them approved for promotion, appraisals, "homes and two three of them" etc etc....So who are you guys blaming...I dont even need to point out what is the power that lies with good advertising and what all is being done. Its all there. Just one to silent all you morons who must be thinking this guy knows shit is- the Silent national anthem by Mudra.
Well hope you people get the point. Its neither the industry nor the client. Its creatives like me and you who give up on whats good. Morality is completely another issue. And for those who think its still not the solution, please send your vulnerable minds out in the park to play and not watch TV. Change that and then you can hurl missiles at everyone else cos brother, its not just the TV...There are video games, books, newspapers, classmates and the holy INTERNET providing the same sexist/nudist/violent/"immoral" stuff you wont want your impressionable minds to grab on...

Cheers

of course there is a good side to advertising. you are damn right about it. but that doesn't mean one doesn't criticise the growing instances of insensitive advertising in the media. it's this realisation that will make the field better and ads more sensitive.

if we do not talk about the bad sides, they will never get corrected. and are there not enough bad sides? rampant bribery, insentitive people, poor quality client servicing. perhaps not in your country mr zhikov...

@mrZhirkov is right. Advertising is a wonderful thing which also lets us watch TV and enjoy so many things. Hundreds of events, charities, TV, radio, internet et is enabled because of advertising spend. Lets be kind.
Truth Hurts. But bad advertising hurts even more.
