my design...
design is functional. this is my core belief. design is human. not virtual. because it is meant for people. it doesn’t happen with fancy software and super computers. it takes birth with a thought. a simple thought that connects it with people. design is not art. design is meant for a purpose. if it does not communicate, holds no interaction, it is not design. design is not a self-sustaining ecosystem, but a two-way osmotic diaphragm. yes, design is functional. and therefore, it has to work like any other tangible feeling. a good design touches you. tickles you. at times, hopefully, even leaves you amazed. design is sensory. be it a visually stunning graphic piece of work, the rough molding of a new instrument or even the sky-reaching architecture of a building. it arouses your senses. any of them. sometimes all of them.
i have a university diploma, for fine art and design that sparked a life long practice. i have a serious crush on photography and i’m most often spotted behind my camera. i'm obsessed over the continuity of comprehensive brand campaigns and compulsively constructed custom projects across communication disciplines of 2d graphic, 3d space & direct marketing, time and again.
i speak i critique. i care. i have significant experience with branding / identity at the corporate level with the ability to communicate through collateral materials, publications, catalogs, and packaging within brand styles.
i've worked with patrons large and small, entrepreneurs, agencies and in-house. i encourage long hours, odd clients, low budgets and tight deadlines to try to make me flinch.
my work is available at http://www.design5.biz

its supposed to excite? if you are creative, then excitement should rank above functionality.

in my ten years of experience, functionality has always won over excitement...Pencil_Girl wrote:its supposed to excite? if you are creative, then excitement should rank above functionality.
my work is exciting for me but it has to be functional for the client, rt?

Re: my design...
but it should excite the client's customers. i agree with Pencil_Girl
Truth Hurts. But bad advertising hurts even more.
Re: my design...
i guess so... but again the functionality of the end product definitely outlives the aesthetic beauty over a period of time.TruthHurts wrote:but it should excite the client's customers. i agree with Pencil_Girl
you can sell a product within a nice looking packaging but if the product itself doesn't serve the purpose, doesn't have high quality then its whole goal is lost.

Re: my design...
functionality is but a given. once something is functional, you come in to add the aesthetics. example: tata nano. its functional, but looks sorry.

Re: my design...
then why is it selling? because its serving a purpose ( being functional!) or cause it looks like what it looks likeTruthHurts wrote:functionality is but a given. once something is functional, you come in to add the aesthetics. example: tata nano. its functional, but looks sorry.
i guess the point i'm trying to make was that a good design connects with people.
and let me quote my own words here..."design is functional. and therefore, it has to work well like any other tangible 'real' feeling."

i don't do BAD design, i follow a belief that good design especially should be functional.
i never stated that to be functional you can ignore aesthetics.

Re: my design...
Design5 is right. Design has to be aesthetic AS WELL AS FUNCTIONAL. there is no space for offbeat dysfunctional design. there is no pont in having typography that you cant read.

and to all the guys who've been nice enough to comment on my work, i've got ten years of working in design shops and BTL agencies with a BFA, i left my last job as Creative director only to be home with my kid (and catch on some creative breath!), so please do not consider me an amateur earning through her 'hobby'
