Not long ago Advertising agencies with PSU clients were lookeed down upon by other high cadre ad agencies. The picture has changed dramatically in the last few years, with top agencies vying for PSU clients in a big way. Assurance of payments is what agencies are looking for and get it. But has anyone thought about the despairing scene of creative guys? They have to churn out ideas that are staid, used & (abused) and shit. The babu's sitting in high chairs don't understand an iota of creativity. All they ask for is GIVE ME MORE!(IDEAS) And there is no reasoning about why certain idea gets the boot, they say, THEY JUST DON'T LIKE IT! The life of creative guys becomes miserable. Client servicing says, WHAT TO DO, WE ARE ALSO HELPLESS. In fact, visualy speaking they are forced to do creatives (?) that are repetitive and senseless. Any time they give creative stuff, the BUT WHO WILL UNDERSTAND THIS SYNDROME surfaces. I want your thoughts, opinions or whatever. And be expressive, give vent your thoughts.[/b]
Hi Killer. Good topic, very interesting subject. I always wonder when will Sir Martin Sorell buy DAVP the govt's ad agency which probably spends the highest amount on media. I think for PSU advertising to get better we will have to wait for the 2nd generation of politicians to come of Age when they graduate from Harvard and bring fresh ideas into the country.
On the other hand, do not forget who we talking to. Sometimes the client is your biggest consumer insight. If they can't get it how do you expect the consumer to get it.
If you remember, some of teh best TV Soaps happened on Doordarshan : Nukkad, Buniyaad, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, The World This Week (?) etc...
Also some of the best Public Service Campaigns have happned on PSUs: Do you remember the famous Animated series : 'Ek Titley, Anek Titliyaan, Didi didi, yeh anek kya hota hai?'???
Has anything BETTER been ever done, in terms of script, animation, storytelling, compostion of lyrics etc etc... basically perhaps the best animated TV ever done in India. (dont remember, but I think it was Vijaya Muley, she had once lectured us too)

Then if you look at contemporary PSU work, check out SBI work by Ogilvy and the recently released Madhya PRadesh Tourism work (Come Prepared) again by Ogilvy (Excellent art direction). Then theres the Incredible India Campaign by V Sunil and Satbir at Ogilvy.
